Natural Extracts Industries Ltd (NEI) is pioneering the sustainable, natural flavour manufacturing industry in Tanzania for global export, starting with vanilla and other flavour extracts.
The company works in all areas, from cultivation to post-harvest processing, value-added manufacturing, international sales, and marketing. The smallholder outgrower network currently integrates over 10,000 vanilla farmers from Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Morogoro, Mbeya, Kagera and Tanga regions in Tanzania as well as from Uganda and through this sourcing model NEI aims to deliver a long-term socioeconomic impact by increasing annual smallholder farmer household income.

Job Responsibilities
Overseeing relevant employees and related contractors (such as field officers, procurement agents, farmer champions, pollinators, farmer groups, nurseries, Vanilla Centers of Excellence, etc.) is part of managing the company’s farmer out-grower program through its branch network, which covers Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, Kagera, Morogoro, Arusha, Tanga, Uganda, and any other future operating regions. It also entails ensuring the efficient procurement of vanilla and other raw/input materials and meeting predetermined goals (as determined and authorized by the management team). Additional responsibilities include:
- Achieving the desired levels of output, cost, and quality from every area via teamwork, stakeholder involvement, forward planning, and farmer loyalty
- Ensuring operational excellence and farmer capacity building via monitoring, training, audits, and problem-solving; this will also entail employing data analytics to provide informative reports from the Source Trace System (STS) to assist the extension team in making data-driven decisions.
- Increasing the number of farmers in the out-grower scheme, prioritizing existing geographies (Kagera, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, Morogoro, Tanga, and Uganda), and leaning toward organizing as many farmers as possible into self-leading farmer groups or Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) are ways to ensure the sustainability of both supply chain volumes and quality.
- Overseeing the network of franchisees and contractors, including performance management, traceability, and registration
- Coordinating partnerships with NGOs and funders as well as associated projects for Tanzania and Uganda, including personnel, reporting, budgetary control, and general project administration
- Ensuring that all guidelines, regulations, manuals, and procedures pertaining to our grower management are kept current and applicable in terms of legality, practicality, and technicalities
- Guaranteeing an exceptional company image and high-quality service to farmers, farmer associations, contractors, franchisees, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations/funds
- Coordinating farmer marketing initiatives to make sure NEI is top of mind all year round, especially in the months before harvest;
- Overseeing agricultural technology solutions for extension team management enabled by smartphones;
- Ensuring that the business satisfies environmental and social impact indicators (ESG) and targets; this includes reporting on these metrics and improving farmer income for farmers who sell to the business and to intermediaries (such as processors, organizations, and CBOs);
- Enforcing standards and procedures for traceability, and as the business develops, managing the supply chain team’s implementation of pertinent international standards certification, such as FSSC 22000, Global GAP, EU/USDA/JAS organic, Kosher, Fair Trade, Fair for Life, etc.;
- Ensuring data timeliness, cleanliness, and integrity for all data entered on STS.
- Coordinating with pertinent parties, such as government representatives, farmer associations, processing groups, regulatory organizations (such NEMC, Village/Ward/District Councils, OSHA, Fire Department, TPRI, TFRI, etc.), business and non-governmental organizations, etc.;
- Ensuring adherence to donor policies, procedures, and record-keeping; contributing to donor reports as required;
Desired skills
- Strong leadership abilities, the capacity to motivate and sway people, establish the direction of their teams, and oversee their work on their own
- Agricultural sciences, rural development, or agronomy bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; a master’s degree is preferred.
- A minimum of six years of managerial experience, preferably with regular contact with a range of stakeholders, including farmers, NGOs, government representatives, and others.
- A minimum of three years’ experience managing value chains based on plantations and/or outgrowers;
- Competent in project management, budgeting, report narrative writing, smallholder farming and plantation operations management, and using IT systems and analytics for data reporting
- Strong interpersonal and organizational abilities, the capacity to understand and accept different cultural viewpoints, and the ability to lead others successfully in difficult situations;
- The capacity to settle disputes and engage in productive negotiations with third parties, such as contractors, government representatives, and farmer associations, while adhering to the proper policies and procedures;
- The capacity to communicate both orally and in writing in English and, preferably, Swahili, in a clear and effective manner (horizontally and vertically);
- Proficiency in creating and overseeing yearly goals (KPIs) and sustainability reporting
- Exceptionally knowledgeable in computer productivity suites like Google Apps, Microsoft Office, and smartphone-based traceability solutions;
- The capacity to reside for a significant amount of time (at least 25% of the year) in the Tanzanian regions mentioned above;
- Unquestionable Integrity and a passion for social impact in the agriculture sector.
