The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) was established by the Supreme Council of Sports in Africa – Zone 6. It brings together 14 nations of Southern Africa under a single umbrella, with the goal of developing the game of football in the region. This is not just from a playing point of view, but also with respects referees and the administration of the game. COSAFA was formed in 1983 in Malawi. The 14 member countries of COSAFA are Angola, Botswana, Comores, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Associate Member Reunion. Botswana was elected to host the Secretariat of COSAFA. This has been the case since 1992 when Ismail Bhamjee was elected President of COSAFA and Ashford Mamelodi appointed Secretary General. In 2008, it was decided to open an administrative office in Johannesburg, South Africa which is the hub of the region.

Do you think your professional history and educational background will enable you to bring the organization up to the highest international standards? A RESEARCH Coordinator (Freelancer) is needed by CAF.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a focal point and liaison for research activities and correspondence between the CAF HQ, and Member Associations of the Zonal Unions.
  • Coordinate and identify appropriate premises and requirements for research activities at the tournament.
  • Liaising with the Research Lead regarding the appointment, training, and monitoring of research personnel in their Zonal Union (ie COSAFA)
  • Read, oversee, and manage the efficient conduct of research activities in the COSAFA Zone.
  • Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures in regulatory frameworks, data management, and overall research activities.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and visualizations of research findings at Zonal level.
  • Assist with harmonizing data collection and research activities in the Member Associations in the Zone.
  • Manage the administrative needs relating to research activities in the Zonal Union.
  • Maintain the Zonal Union research databases and control access as relevant.
  • Maintain the Zonal Union calendar of research activities and deadlines.
  • Assisting with other tasks and project support as needed.

Requirements (profile):

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, sports science, sports management, or a related field. Having a master’s degree or above is beneficial.
  • Certifications in data analytics, research methods, or project management are further benefits.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in research, ideally with African sports
  • Two(2) or more years of minimum experience working with clients in the sports sector. An extra benefit is experience working in a national or international setting.
  • The capacity and willingness to travel inside the relevant Zonal Union.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English. Any more Zonal Union wording that is pertinent would be beneficial.

Additional requirements

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software and data gathering (e.g., Qualtrics, SPSS, Excel)
  • Knowledge of the football scene in Africa
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Able to communicate and convey research findings with ease
