Safa Project In Tanzania Call for PhD Scholarships Application. The Mzumbe University (MU) is a public university located in Tanzania. Established in 2001, it is renowned for offering various programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across various disciplines. MU has partnered with the Kühne Foundation (KF-TZ) a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education, training, and research in logistics and supply chain management in developing countries. The foundation collaborates with various educational institutions to enhance academic programs, promote research, and develop practical approaches to logistics and supply chain management.

This partnership aims to:

  1. Enhance the quality of education: The collaboration might involve the development of curriculum, training programs, workshops, and seminars focusing on project management, logistics, and supply chain management to helps students gain practical knowledge and skills relevant to industry needs.
  2. Enhance research and knowledge exchange: The partnership might support joint research projects, conferences, and knowledge-sharing activities to advance understanding and innovation in project management within the Tanzanian context.
  3. Support professional development: The partnership might include opportunities for faculty exchange programs, training sessions, and capacity-building initiatives to enhance the skills of educators and professionals in project management.

Currently MU and KF-TZ are collaborating on the Stiftung’s Allianz für Afrika gGmbH (SAFA) Project – a four-year project implemented in the four regions; Mbeya, Songwe, Kilimanjaro and Arusha to enhance livelihood prospects for young people in Tanzania. The project has three thematic areas: Agriculture, Logistics Education and Health. Implementing the project with partners, HRNS and DSW, KF-TZ oversees higher education, vocational training, and consultancy services in Logistics, Transportation, and Supply Chain and offer gender-sensitive, market-oriented value-added services and knowledge to young people.

Through the SAFA project, MU, Mbeya Campus College (MU-MCC) and KFTZ have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure that the university is involved in knowledge creation and transfer related to sustainable Logistics and Supply Chain Management. 

The project will sponsor two candidates to peruse PhD at MU through a cosupervision approach involving selected experts from international universities and thus MU in collaboration with KF-TZ invite interested and qualified candidates with background in areas such as Logistic Management, Logistic and Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Public Health, Health Systems Management, Agriculture, and Applied Statistics to apply for the scholarships. The two selected

PhD candidates will conduct their PhD research in the areas of Health and/or Agriculture Supply Chain Management.  

Selection of Candidates 

The candidates will be selected based on the MU selection criteria. The project embraces equal opportunities in the recruitment of PhD candidates. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility 

  • Hold a master’s degree from a recognised higher learning institution (as per Tanzania Commission for Universities) with involvement in research activities in the areas of Health, Agriculture and Value Chain 
  • Meet other criteria for acceptance into the MU PhD Programme see link:
  • Have motivation to become a researcher and a scholar in the area of Health or Agriculture Supply Chain Management 
  • Demonstrate fluency in both spoken and written English Language
  • Demonstrate good knowledge and skills in qualitative and quantitative research design and analysis tools e.g. NVivo, SPSS and STATA.

General conditions for the PhD Scholarship

This is a three-year scholarship and selected PhD candidates will be enrolled at MU. The scholarships will commence soon after the students have been selected and enrolled. Each PhD candidate will have at least one supervisor from MU and at least one supervisor from an international university depending on the nature of the study. In addition to fees and stipends stipulated in MU guidelines, each PhD candidates will be supported to visit his/her international co-supervisor to attend for academic purposes. 

Application Requirements 

All interested applicants should submit the following:

  1. An application cover letter. 
  2. A statement of motivation statement: The statement should briefly explain the candidate’s interest in the PhD programme selected and why the candidate considers himself/herself fit to join the programme 
  3. A Concept note (proposal) of research idea, objective and indicative methodology (Max 3500 words). 
  4. A recent Curriculum Vitae 
  5. A list of publications (if any) including access 
  6. Scanned copies of academic transcripts and certificates
  7. Two letters of recommendation. These letters should include telephone numbers, addresses and e-mail addresses of the referees. At least one letter of support must be from a senior faculty member of a home institution who can attest to the candidate’s academic aptitude outlining the candidate’s career and research goals and how the training program will assist the candidate to achieve the goals.

Selection Process

All applications must be submitted no later than 18 January, 2024. Shortlisting of candidates will be conducted based on their initial applications and recommendation letters. Successful candidates will be invited for interviews scheduled on 21 and 22 January, 2024. The final decision will be communicated by 24 January, 2024. Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Relevant academic transcripts and certificates (10%)
  • Rationale for applying to the program (20%)
  • Relevance of proposed research areas and interests (15%)
  • Commitment and plans to practice research long-term (20%)
  • Previous professional and research experience (25%)
  • References (10%)

The selected candidates will be required to complete the MU PhD registration process.
